What does a compression garment do?

Oct 13, 2022

A compression garment is something that is worn to reduce symptoms of lymphedema by putting light pressure on the affected areas. Head and neck compression garments typically cover the neck, cheeks, under the chin, and sometimes the entire face, similar to a ski mask.

Complete decongestive therapy of the head and neck consists of manual lymphatic drainage, skin care, exercise, and compression. Manual lymph drainage works to move the lymph fluid while the compression garment provides additional pressure to reduce rate of swelling and prevent lymph fluid from building up in that area. It is recommended a therapist guides you in determining whether or not you are a candidate for a compression garment and if so, which type. The type of compression garment is based on which areas are impacted by the lymphedema and other anatomical variations such as tracheostomy or stoma sites. WIth guidance from a therapist, compression garments can be ordered over the counter or they can be fitted and customized using measurements of the head, neck, and face.
