Course Overview

This immersive weekend course offers hands-on, clinically applicable training in head & neck lymphedema management across the cancer care continuum.

Designed for speech-language pathologists and rehabilitation professionals working with oncology populations, the course emphasizes practical skills, clear clinical pathways, and real-world implementation—not lecture-heavy instruction.


Hands-On Skills & Clinical Focus

Participants will receive extensive hands-on instruction in:

  • Anterior and posterior manual lymphatic drainage approaches

  • Intraoral techniques for head & neck lymphedema

  • Elastic taping techniques

  • Scar management strategies

  • Compression therapy, including:

    • Creation of practical, homemade compression garments

    • Over-the-counter compression options and clinical decision-making

  • Subsite-specific clinical pathways for:

    • Proactive (pre-treatment) intervention

    • During active treatment

    • Survivorship care


Collaborative Learning & Product Integration

This course includes collaborative learning opportunities and exposure to tools that support clinical outcomes, including:

  • Optional catered lunches sponsored by local clinical representatives

  • Education on adjunct modalities relevant to this patient population

  • Collaboration with dysphagia-focused product partners

  • Hands-on exposure to ARKJ tools

What Sets This Course Apart: Your Instructors
 
  • Brad Smith, MS, CCC/SLP, CLT
    Brad is a speech-language pathologist and certified lymphedema therapist. He graduated in 1988 and became one of the earliest SLP-certified lymphedema therapists in the U.S. in 2006. Now with 20 years of head & neck lymphedema experience, Brad helped build one of the busiest head & neck lymphedema programs in the country at MD Anderson and continues to mentor clinicians nationwide.

  •  Lauren Meffen, MA, CCC-SLP, CLT
    Lauren is a speech-language pathologist with a passion for treating voice and swallowing disorders. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Florida and has worked across hospital, skilled nursing, home health, and outpatient settings.

    Over the years, Lauren has developed a specialization in head & neck oncology care, with advanced training in lymphedema management, trismus therapy, muscle tension dysphonia, and myofascial release techniques. She strongly champions a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach focused on treating the whole patient.

Refund Policy
  • Cancellations made prior to the course start date may be eligible for a full refund.

  • Refund requests must be submitted within 4 weeks of registration.

  • No refunds for failure to meet completion requirements.

  • If the provider cancels the course due to emergency or unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be issued.

  • Learners who fail to meet completion requirements may retake the course for $49 within 30 days of reporting.


Complaint Policy

Complaints must be submitted in writing within 7 business days of course completion.
Participants will be notified of the resolution within 10 business days.

  • Physical Therapy Continuing Education Credit
    This course is designed to meet the continuing education standards outlined by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and is appropriate for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. Because physical therapy continuing education approval is regulated at the state level, this course is submitted for approval based on the state of licensure of registered participants.
    This course has previously received approval for physical therapy continuing education credit in Texas, Florida, California, Virginia, and Ohio. Many states accept CEU approval granted by another state; however, acceptance is determined by each individual state licensing board. In states that do not offer course pre-approval, we work with CEUApproval.com to ensure compliance with state requirements.
    Participants are encouraged to verify acceptance of continuing education credits with their state licensing board prior to registration if they have specific questions.
